OpenAI launched a new version of ChatGPT yesterday. It’s called GPT-6 Astra.
If you use ChatGPT for work, this is the biggest upgrade in a while. And unlike most AI news, this one has a change you’ll actually notice.
Here’s the simple version.
Until now, ChatGPT mostly wrote things for you. You asked a question, it gave you text. If you wanted something done — a form filled, a report pulled, a file updated — you did that part yourself.
Astra can do that part. It opens websites, clicks buttons, fills forms, moves between tabs, and finishes the job. And it’s about twice as fast at this as the previous version.
That’s the headline. Everything else is detail.
OpenAI tested this and the model completed around 73% of computer tasks it was given, taking roughly half the time the older version took. Think: filling out forms, updating records in your CRM, organising a calendar, doing research across many sites.
Presentations, Word documents, spreadsheets — and it follows your template and brand style instead of producing something generic. If you give it your format, it sticks to it.
Roughly a 20-point jump on the standard developer tests. It also remembers more: on long projects it keeps searchable notes instead of forgetting the earlier work once the conversation gets long.
Near-perfect scores on advanced maths tests, and OpenAI says it helped with genuine unsolved maths problems.
This one is the reason the launch has been slow and careful. More on that below.
If you already pay for ChatGPT, you’re covered:
For developers using it inside their own software (the API — the connection that lets one piece of software talk to another), it’s roughly $10 per million words in and $50 per million words out. There’s also a Fast Mode that costs double and runs double the speed.
It’s being released slowly, in batches, rather than to everyone at once.
It started with a small group of organisations and is opening up to everyone over the next few days. You’ll get it on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans, and through the API and AWS.
If you don’t see it yet, nothing’s wrong. It’s a deliberate staged release — OpenAI turning it on for one batch of accounts at a time — not a capacity problem.
Skip the AGI debate in the headlines. Three things here actually matter.
Astra builds documents and presentations that follow a template you give it. If your team spends two or three days a month assembling reports, audit decks or proposals from data that already exists, most of that time is now recoverable.
The catch: you need a proper template and style guide first. Most teams don’t have one written down. That’s the real work — the AI part is easy once it exists.
This is the one almost nobody is talking about.
If ChatGPT can fill forms and browse sites on someone’s behalf, then some of your visitors will soon be software, not people. And software gets stuck on things people don’t:
None of this is exotic to fix. It’s the same work as making a site accessible for screen readers — work most sites have skipped for years. It’s just that now there’s a commercial reason to do it. If you have already started optimising your content for AI-driven search, this is the next layer of the same job.
Every AI writing, SEO and reporting tool you subscribe to is built on top of these models. The underlying costs just moved, so subscription prices will follow over the next few months. Worth reviewing your stack in a couple of months rather than renewing everything today.
Astra uses a new technique that makes its reasoning less visible than before. OpenAI has said so openly. In practice: for writing a blog outline or a subject line, it doesn’t matter. For anything involving money, legal wording, or customer data, have a person check the output before it goes out. That was already good advice; it matters more now.
The model scored 100% on a security exploit test. OpenAI has restricted the most powerful security features for normal users, which is why the rollout is slow. It won’t affect your marketing work, but it explains why access is patchy across your team.
And the AGI headlines? OpenAI has hinted Astra is close to AGI — artificial general intelligence, meaning human-level ability across most tasks. There’s no agreed definition of that and no way to measure it. Judge the model on what it does for your actual work, not on the word.
